This is just terrible.

This is why I avoid Black Friday.

When I heard this on the radio this morning I turned to the boy and said "what have we become"?

Black Friday has definitely cast a Dark Cloud over this country, when the chance of a good deal greatly outweighs the civility of concern for our fellow man. What savages we must be to put aside any form of compassion as human beings for the bloated ego of a materialistic path.
A Young Man of 34, working for a temp agency - the day after Thanksgiving - trampled to death.
Think about it.
God bless this Man and his family.

It would be interesting to see if this tragedy makes any long-term difference in the ability of unions to get a toe-hold at Wally World and other chains like it.

After the trampling incident, the head of the largest U.S. retail workers union, the United Food and Commercial Workers, asked, "Where were the safety barriers? Where was security? How did store management not see dangerous numbers of customers barreling down on the store in such an unsafe manner?"

Wal-Mart has resisted union organizing efforts in its stores (so has Target, BTW), so I'm not surprised that a union official would have strong words for the company in the wake of such a tragedy. But that said, he still has a good point.

(In the interests of full disclosure, I belong to a union, but not to the United Food and Commercial Workers.)

P.S. The Wal-Mart store where the man was trampled didn't have enough security to handle the crowds, according to a police spokesman in Nassau County, N.Y. http://www.cbc.ca/world/story/2008/11/29/walmart-investigation.html
