Apologies for the delay: the back-and-forth discussion about July's targets got derailed by iPhone coverage for a bit. Anyway -- it's not too late to define your Reduce/Reuse/Recycle for this month. Anyone in? You know the drill ...
No goal is too big or too small. My hat is off to you if this is the month where you decide to reuse all 24 old bikinis currently overstuffing your lingerie drawer. My hat is also off to you if this is the month where you're like, "I believe I will be reusing my Creamsicle sticks as a trivet."
You don't have to nail all three of the big Rs -- just the ones that you feel like doing. But if you want to join me on all three, that's great.
You can repeat any of your reduce/reuse/recycling goals from month-to-month. Sometimes, these projects take time.
This month, I'm taking aim at my lunch. I'm reducing my plastic sandwich bag use -- no more using them for pretzels or cherries -- and I'm going to be recycling the organic waste left over afterward. (I eat a lot of fruit and hard-boiled eggs, and those scraps can go to the compost pile) To help me make these steps, I ditched my usual freezer-sized plastic bag for a lunch bag and hit Tupperware for some sandwich keepers and a set of small containers for storing my daily fruit stashes.
I have to admit, buying something in the name of reducing my overall material consumption feels counterintuitive. (I read the July 1, 07, NYT article "Buying Into the Green Movement" and wondered, "Am I employing that kind of reasoning -- where it's okay to keep on shopping so long as I'm buying the correct stuff?")
But I know from experience that it takes a lot to kill Tupperware -- I have my original Modular Mates pantry set from 1993 (as a matter of fact, Rage Diaries commenter Roger was there when I bought it), and it still looks brand-new despite the ravages of time, freezers, dishwashers, microwaves, etc. So I expect to have and use this stuff for years, which means I won't be using plastic bags for years. And that is the kind of change I want to make.
As for this month's reusing goal: I have a lot of hardware cloth left over after building my three raised beds. I think I'll use it to build a screen to help diffuse the strong sun the middle bed is getting -- maybe that'll help the poor pumpkin plants in there thrive.
Now what about you? What are your goals for the month?
